From the tarns in the Lakes to the coast in Cardiff, a campervan adventure is an exciting way to explore the UK. But what about when you need to stretch your legs and take a breather?

Part of the joys of a road trip is finding superb campsites that provide luxurious comfort along with peaceful quiet. We have rounded up five of the best campervan-friendly locations in the UK.

  • Manchester

The metropolitan is big and bustling, but that is not to say it lacks the bucolic sceneries every avid road trip fan fancies. Greater Manchester boasts of green spaces, woodlands and orchards, picture-perfect towns with rustic stone houses, and lively outdoor activities such as cycling and trekking.

Manchester is roughly an hour’s drive away from the Peak District, holding space for some of the best campervanning in the UK, in one of the most visited national parks. Whether you are exploring the city itself or merely passing through on your way to the Peaks, you will find plenty of smart campsite options and places to set up with amazing views.

  • Cardiff

With an excellent road network that meanders through dreamy landscapes, charming towns, and mysterious castles, Wales seems custom-made for road trips. Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is a perfect excuse to get out from your campervan and discover the county’s history, cuisine, and culture.

Cardiff Castle is a must-see, so are Cardiff Museum, Bute Park, and the famous Cardiff Bay. After spending the day relishing the sights of the city, you can relax at one of the nearby campsites.

  • The Lake District

The Lake District is the quintessential holiday destination for those seeking a respite from the chaos and commotion of the city. You can spend days in the Lakes and still never run out of fascinating activities to do.

Ramble around Lake Buttermere, follow the trails at Whinlatter Forest Park, sample the famed Grasmere Gingerbread, ghost-hunt at the haunted castle of Muncaster, and star-gaze at Low Gillerthwaite.

The Lakes is a popular camping getaway and is replete with excellent campervan sites so you can rest after hours of gallivanting around. Try Fell End Holiday Park for a 5-star woodland sanctuary, or Hills of Oaks Park for an unobstructed lakeside view of Lake Windermere.

  • Liverpool

Welcome to the birthplace of the Beatles. Whether or not you’re a fan of the Fab Four, The Beatles Story is unmissable. But there are, of course, a gazillion other activities to enjoy in the city.

Visit Tate Liverpool for its art collection, the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral for its striking architecture, Sefton Park for its luxuriant flora, and Bold Street for an unforgettable shopping experience. If you’re longing for some beach time, head to Crosby Beach, a little way out of Liverpool but worth a visit for its beautiful panorama and equally beautiful sunsets.

Hike along Formby Coast and Nature Reserve to find a variety of wildlife, lush woodlands, and a vast expanse of spectacular views. After a day of excursion, you would want to stay in a campsite that offers ultimate relaxation. Check out Chester Fairoaks Caravan Club Site, Woodside Touring Park, and Oakwood Farm Touring Park.

  • Edinburgh

Tradition, history, landmarks – Edinburgh is the gateway to exploring Scotland and Scottish culture. A tour of the imposing Edinburgh Castle is as fascinating as a stroll along the hallways of Holyrood Palace, just as visiting Old Town is as thrilling as seeing New Town.

Walk the dreary passageways of Mary King’s Close, brave the spooky Edinburgh Vaults, explore the Royal Botanical Garden, scale Arthur’s Seat, and try the famous whiskey experience on a distillery tour.

Store up some energy before continuing your road trip at one of the city’s campsites. Check out Linwater Caravan Park, Riverside Caravan Park, and Mortonhall Caravan and Camping Park.
