There has been a steady rise in the interest of caravans and campervans over the last few years, as people are looking for more affordable ways to take holidays – particularly domestic trips in their own country. Not only does it save money in comparison to taking a holiday somewhere abroad, it also means that they are getting out and about and discovering the scenery and countryside that is often very close to home. However, we think that there is another good reason to be interested in hiring or buying RVs, campervans and caravans – Breaking Bad.

You would have to have lived on a desert island or been in a coma for the last 5 years to have heard absolutely nothing about the American show starring Bryan Cranston (of Malcolm In The Middle fame) and Aaron Paul as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, cooks of the purest crystal meth. The original premise of the show was that when underachieving, underpaid and overqualified chemistry teacher Walter White discovers that he has cancer, he turns to cooking meth with his former student, Pinkman, as a way to provide for his family, in case the unthinkable happened. What happened over the course of the 5 amazing seasons is something that we will not go into here, in fear of ruining it for someone who hasn’t finished watching the series yet
There were many things that made the show a success – the dark humour, the study of someone who seemed like a decent person becoming the exact opposites, overuse of the word “bitches”, Shraderbrau and Funyuns. However, from a glamping and camping point of view, there was a rather large and retro talking point – the Fleetwood Bounder RV that appeared in the first 3 seasons, as a makeshift mobile meth lab. The idea was that Walt and Jesse could drive into the middle of nowhere, normally a desert area and cook undisturbed without arousing suspicion or having evidence too close to home.
The RV became a part of many of the iconic moments in the show until it was crushed in the third season, including the very first cooking session and the hilarious episode where the Fleetwood Bounder, nicknamed The Krystal Ship by Pinkman, decided not to work anymore and so they were stuck in the desert, without any food as the Funyuns that Jesse had packed had ran out and so had the water supply, until they made an ad hock battery that gave the old beast enough power to get them home.
Now at Discover Glamping, we are by no means suggesting that you should invest in a retro designed campervan and start cooking meth in the middle of nowhere, or anything else illegal for that matter; but, if you are a fan of the show, we can think of no better way to celebrate your love by travelling your local area in a similar campervan to the one Walt and Jesse roamed (and cooked) in.
If anything, it would be a nice icebreaker if you were visiting a new glamping site and you would be the envy of all your family members and friends who were fans of the show. Although it may be tricky to find a Fleetwood Bounder, we really thought it was interesting just how much stuff you can fit into an average sized campervan, if you were clever about it. Put it this way – if the cooking duo from Breaking Bad can fit everything they need to cook and package crystal meth, then there is surely more than enough space for spending a comfortable holiday in and around one.
