Brett Michaels is perhaps better known to most people as the blonde and very wild frontman of the 80’s American hair/glam rock group Poison, who had big hits with songs like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Unskinny Bop” However, there is one big passion in his life that you might find quite surprising – he is a big RV enthusiast.
It was this passion for RV’s and his hands-on, DIY approach to renovating and altering RVs that led him to become the host of the Travel Channel’s Rock My RV reality show. In a similar vein to shows such as Pimp My Ride etc., Michaels and an elite team of highly skilled and experience custom RV fabricators and designers take on the challenge each episode of turning an RV owners ordinary and pretty nondescript looking vehicles into outrageously OTT and truly amazing luxury mobile homes ever!
The series originally ran in 2013 and there is also a second series already planned. Although it is not specifically about glamping or small builds, we feel at Discover Glamping that it gives aspiring glamping and small build designer’s inspiration as to what is possible.
Episode Guide
As a preview for the show to see whether or not you want to check it out, we will give you a brief guide to what is included in each episode.
Episode 1 – Luxury On Wheels
In the first episode of the show, Bret and his team take a part a family’s old and shabby RV to convert and totally transform it into what is essentially a 5 star hotel on wheels. The finished motorhome features an indoor fireplace, lavish and sumptuous bed, wood floors and granite worktops.
Episode 2 – Rollin VIP Lounge
Bret and his highly skilled team do not have time on their side in the second episode when they are set back trying to transform an old and used 32 ft. RC into a totally pimped-out VIP lounge. In the finished build there is an epic rooftop deck and classy spiral staircase that have to be seen to be believed; as well as just what any party needs – an air-powered canon for shooting t-shirts!
Episode 3 – Big Foot Hunter
A father and son team ask Bret and the RV mod team to turn their seen-better-days 80’s ambulance into a completely customised and high tech RV suitable for hunting Big Foot! Yes, we did say hunting Big Foot! In the finished design there is everything from a cutting edge thermal imaging system to digital camouflage and fully functioning satellite tracking.
Episode 4 – Ultimate Party RV
The team have a difficult task in the fourth episode having been tasked to create a tribute to a family’s late son from a 20 year old busted up RV. The resulting build is an incredible party bus with a high-tech sound system, exterior theatre projection TV and a rooftop deck and so much more. Although it may look very different to the party buses that can be hired from a site like dreamlimousinesdetroit.com/our-limo-rental-fleet/party-buses/, a good time is almost guaranteed when you board this bus!
Episode 5 – Epic Sausage Wagon
In the fifth episode the team tear out a couple’s 40 years old GMC Canyonlands and convert it into an RV that doubles as a sausage wagon and cross country vehicle. It is given amazing features including a huge indoor and outdoor serving section, a well-equipped gourmet kitchen and diamond plated flooring for that extra touch of bling!
Episode 6 – Mobile Command Vehicle
Despite facing a whole lot of rust during the sixth episode build, Bret and his team of experts still completely transform a former Navy Seal’s 40 years old Mobilux into a cutting edge and very cool Mobile Command Centre!
Episode 7 – Stealth Bomber RV
Sometimes all you need is a good imagination and a team of experts like the ones who work with Bret, obviously! Imagination and expertise were definitely needed when the team worked on a couple’s classically designed 1966 Buffalo tour bus who wanted it transformed into a usable stealth bomber-inspired RV of the future. The amazing finished vehicle featured an out of this world entertainment centre and area, a BBQ grill that works automatically and a hidden from sight wine chiller (evidently following the stealth theme!)
Episode 8 – Zombie Killing RV
If you thought the Big Foot hunter RV was strange, the couple in the eighth episode manage to top it in terms of strangeness with their Zombie Killing RV idea. Yes, you didn’t misread that there – they wanted a vehicle to help them survive the Zombie Apocalypse! They have a very rare 4 by 4 Roxor from the 1970s which causes more than a few problems for Bret and the team due to the scarcity of parts. However, they come good in the end and create a truly imposing off-roader chariot with all terrain accoutrements, a rooftop tent and stainless steel appliances.
Episode 9 – Junk in the Trunk
In the ninth episode of the show we see full proof that sometimes you need to completely rip something apart and start from scratch to make a truly beautiful thing. By the time the team are finished with an old 70’s RV’s rear end, it looks like something from the future rather than the past with a unique, mechanically operated, fold down lounge area.
Episode 10 – Baby Got Beach
In the tenth episode we get an insight into Bret’s crazier rocker side when the team work on a couples old and dull Lazy Daze and convert it into a road-ready beach suite. The finished build is completed by stunning features such as an indoor and outdoor bar, a collection of cutting edge exterior-suited electronics for when they are entertaining and a very unique, customised trailer.
Episode 11 – Killer Cut Mobile
In the eleventh episode Bret and his team face one of their hardest projects ever and only just overcome a plethora of obstacles. These include an unimaginable amount of mould, serious levels of water damage and devastating problems with the actual structure as well as a whole host of other setbacks. The plan was to make an entrepreneur’s dreams a reality and changing the on-its-last-legs RV into an amazing, working and completely mobile barbershop.
Episode 12 – Caddy Attack
Just as you are watching through the series thinking that Bret and his band of merry men can overcome any problem and work through any obstacle, it looks like they bit off more than they can chew in the 12th episode. When faced with converting a 62 Cadillac Deville, they decide to strip it down form parts and use it to upgrade a worn out and ready for the junkyard 90’s RV!
Episode 13 – RV Catastrophe
The problems that Michaels and his team have faced in previous episodes are nothing compared to the ones they face in the thirteenth. Due to the truly catastrophic problems that give this episode its name including rust, mould and mechanical issues – the team decide to just start from a completely new rig to build a truly memorable RV.
Episode 14 – Ultimate Tailgater
In the fourteenth episode we meet the sports enthusiasts, Brittany and Sean, who want Bret and his amazing team’s help to convert their International 73 school bus into the most incredible tailgating machine ever seen.
Episode 15 – Epic Toterhome Overhaul
The biggest challenges they have faced in the past are nothing to what Bret’s team face in the fifteenth episode. What exactly is the challenge? To take an old Lovell Brothers hauler for race cars and transform it into a fully-functioning workshop that features a BBQ grill and a rooftop decking area.
Episode 16 – Epic RV Giveaway
In a competition that was running during the making of the show, Bret and his team of designers make one very lucky contestant’s dreams a reality when they transform a drab and boring looking coach into a truly unique, bespoke and totally tricked out RV.
